Creating Cover Letters

by BitmixSoft Support - 10/25/2006

"Cover letters are (as their names suggests) a type of letter used to accompany your resume when applying for a job."

There are essentially two purposes of a cover letter: to indicate the position for which you’re applying; and to persuade a recruiter that you’re the best candidate to fill the position. If you’ve already read the resumes section, you’ll know that your resume is also designed to “sell” recruiters on your candidacy for a specific position. However, the content of your cover letter should be different than that of your resume:

• A resume is a factual listing of accomplishments and skills that directly relate to your target job.

• Your cover letter highlights those points from your resume that are most relevant to your target position, explains the connection between your key resume points and the position requirements, and seeks to persuade the reader how your experience will allow you to excel in the open position and hiring organization.

You’ll note that a key concept here is customization – to a specific position within a specific organization. Hence, before creating a cover letter you need to have a career goal (so that you know the positions and employers for which you should customize your cover letter) and to have completed research (to understand the needs of recruiting organizations). However, this doesn’t mean that it will take you days to write each and every cover letter. As Career Services recommends throughout this website, by limiting the number of position types and industries that you target, you can create just a few cover letters that will need relatively minor changes each time you apply for a new opportunity.
